Nutrition - Metabolic TypingBy Lisa Musgrove With todays magazines and papers full of new celebrity diets, and success stories from lots of different diets being thrown at you, it is difficult to know what to believe. Are high protein diets the way to go, or perhaps low fat, or what about counting the calories!! The truth is that everyone has an individual body that requires feeding in an individual way. Most of the diets that are popular at the moment produce some fantastic results for some and tragic results for others. So why is this? One explanation is that just as every person is not the same on the outside, we are also unique on the inside. Every individual requires different types of food and in varying proportions. It could be that you need less fat than perhaps others may, or perhaps you are a protein type who needs more red meat and dark fish. If this is the case, then this would explain why certain people say that the Atkins diet (a protein dominant diet) works for them and yet for other people one of the various low fat diets work. What is definite for everyone is that we all should eat good quality food. If you can locate a good place to buy organic food, then you have taken a huge step towards eating well. A lot of diets are backed with research that shows how well and fast their diets get you to lose weight. Perhaps the research should show how much healthier you get, and as a fantastic side effect how much weight you lose. Recently red meat has shown a very big revival as the popularity of the Atkins diet increases, whereas dieticians are warning against eating too much, as it is high in fat and therefore bad for you. The truth is probably that red meat is good for you, if youre a protein type, and that the only thing that may have given it a bad reputation is the quality of the meat that has been produced. Fast food companies spend a lot of time making our food convenient and tasty and so you may think that they are great for you. Also low fat convenience food has had a lot of money spent on making it taste great and easy to make. To go in to why these foods are not so great for you is perhaps for another day. What I would suggest is that if a food has a long ingredients list and includes things you have never heard of then that food is probably best avoided. The more natural foods you can eat, preferably from an organic source the better. Most diets these days are based on a standard that has worked for some people and it is assumed that it will work for everyone. This is a strange concept that doesnt take into account that we are all different and therefore how can one diet suit everyone. Around the world there are populations who survive mainly on protein and fat (Eskimos) and others who thrive on a very low fat diet (Bantu tribes in Africa). Both peoples do well on their natural diet but if these people are exposed to the foods and dietary customs of modern civilisation, their health rapidly deteriorate. As people travel more and marry others from different backgrounds the mix of foods required changes with each generation. So how do we determine which foods will help our bodies function at their best and create optimum health? Metabolic TypeA good way to find out which foods will suit your body is to find out your metabolic type. This is a questionnaire based system that you can do through a trained advisor, via the internet. It is then followed by a 45 minute phone call and an emailed program, giving you an idea of the types of foods that are suited to your body. Once you discover your metabolic type and begin to eat accordingly it will put an end to food cravings, blood sugar imbalances, digestive problems, headaches depression and other nagging ailments. If you eat to your metabolic type long-term benefits include maintenance of your ideal weight, a stronger immune system and improved energy.
